Makena Beach & Golf Resort Hotel Review: There was once a time when many had left this South Maui resort for dead. Fortunately, the Makena Beach & Golf Resort was swooped up by new owners and experienced a multimillion dollar renovation that has revived its classic resort status. A garden atrium dripping in bougainvillea surrounds a waterfall-laden koi pond, and the unique A-shape of the 290-room, 20-suite property ensures all of the rooms have at least a partial ocean view. The well-maintained accommodations feature granite counters and HD flat screen televisions, and the 1500-square-foot suites allow guests to gaze onto a five-island view from two separate balconies. Work up a sweat in the 2,500-square-foot fitness center, or relax with a soothing massage at the Makena Kai Day Spa, fronting thinly populated and snorkel-friendly Maluaka Beach. This 1,800-acre property offers free bicycle hire and free shuttle service to the shops and restaurants of nearby Wailea. It also features its own 65-foot catamaran for sunset sails and snorkel charters. Chef Marc McDowell presides over the Molokini and Café Kiowai restaurants overlooking the atrium, and Café on the Green provides golfers with a scenic nineteenth-hole setting in the middle of the championship golf course (closed for renovations until the end of 2013). Rounding out the luxury is hand-carved Hawaiian décor and six newly resurfaced tennis courts. The result: the Makena Beach & Golf Resort is the quintessential vacation in South Maui's most isolated and relaxing location.
