Menger Hotel Review: Standing right beside The Alamo, this 1859 hotel has welcomed countless notables. While many have come and gone, Teddy Roosevelt chose to remain behind in the form of a ghost --- or so some say. This member of Historic Hotels of America has been restored to its original Victorian glory, and one of its highlights is the three-story lobby, showcasing Corinthian columns, a leaded-glass skylight and many original furnishings. For all its historic charm, however, the hotel boasts numerous modern comforts. Here you will find the on-site, full-service Alamo Plaza Spa and a large, outdoor heated pool. Guests have the option of staying in restored Victorian accommodations or in newer guest rooms. After a busy day, you can relax in the tropical garden, which was once the home of several alligators. Another option is dining at the Colonial Room or enjoying a drink at the Menger Bar, where Roosevelt recruited many of his Rough Riders. Wi-Fi is complimentary at this smoke-free hotel, and pets are welcome, with restrictions.
