Monmouth Plantation Hotel Review: This National Historic Landmark has been lauded by numerous national magazines and newspapers for its romantic setting and opulent style. It consists of a restored 1818 Greek Revival home and eight historic outbuildings. The gorgeous, 26-acre property is dotted with ponds and dramatic oaks draped in moss. There are just 30 bedrooms and suites, which means attentive, personalized service. The décor is dramatic with four-poster canopy beds draped in golden fabrics, fireplaces and Jacuzzi tubs. Each room is unique, such as the cozy Hankinson Suite, with skylights cut into its angled ceilings. Guests enjoy a complimentary Southern breakfast each morning and hors d'oeuvres in the afternoons. Croquet, fishing, hiking and tennis can be enjoyed on the grounds, which also boast a gazebo and gardens for weddings. Five-course dinners are planned by the chef each day. During Christmas, when the buildings are all dressed up for the holidays, it's a particularly festive time to visit.
