O'Casey's Bed & Breakfast Hotel Review: Although a refresh has upgraded the look and feel of this 1904 house --- specifically the guest rooms, kitchen and public areas --- it still remains an affordable, quaint, charming abode in the historic Monte Vista neighborhood, just a short taxi ride to downtown. A passion for service is evident in the staff's attention to detail. For example, they are happy to accommodate special diets such as gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan in concert with the usual full breakfast fare. Homey rather than glitzy, some of the eight rooms are configured into a studio-style or suite with separate areas, and a few have mini-fridges, microwaves, fireplaces and/or clawfoot tub/shower combos. Extended stay guests including military on TDY or medical rotation receive special monthly rates that include access to the kitchen and laundry facilities. In addition to romance packages, the inn offers a kid-pleasing kit (for a fee) to make your own s'mores and hot cocoa in the outdoor fireplace. A grill and patio seating are available should you feel like having a cookout. This property is good for a family getaway, since kids under ten stay for free. Street parking is free. A fun trivia fact: The inn's most famous guest was President Dwight Eisenhower, who frequented the bed-and-breakfast when he was stationed at nearby Fort Sam Houston.
