Omni La Mansion del Rio Hotel Review: This historic building began as a private school in 1854. Eventually, it evolved into St. Mary's University's law school. In 1966 the blackboards were traded in for beds, and the property became one of the most elegant hotels along the River Walk. Its refined atmosphere is a welcome respite from the riverside bustle. Today visitors are greeted by a lobby filled with Spanish and Mexican antiques. Although the building's collegiate days are over, they are recalled in El Colegio, an intimate piano bar that was once the university library. House restaurants include the fine dining venue, Las Canarias, serving New American cuisine, and Ostra, offering a sustainable seafood menu and oyster bar. Morsels provides a more casual setting for coffee, beverages, pastries, snacks and sandwiches, and room service is also available. Like the public areas, the 338 guest rooms and suites in this smoke-free property echo the Spanish history of the area. Many have beamed ceilings and graceful arches, as well as private balconies overlooking the River Walk. There is no on-site spa, but guests enjoy access to the 17,000-square-foot Mokara Spa at the hotel's sister property just across the River Walk. Upgraded meeting space meets business needs. Pets are welcome, with restrictions.
