The St. Regis Washington, D.C. Hotel Review: From the arched doorway façade to the Oriental carpets and dangling chandeliers of the impressive lobby, this hotel (opened in 1926 when President Calvin Coolidge cut the ceremonial ribbon) is all about elegance. The property underwent a complete renovation of all guest rooms and public spaces, including the lobby, ballroom, fitness center and meeting rooms, and then reopened in 2008. It led the hotel world's high-tech revolution with plasma flat-screen TVs and Wi-Fi; guest rooms are rich in color and furnishings include cushy armchairs, Pratesi linens, framed artwork, gilded mirrors and dressing tables. Bathrobes, slippers and evening turndown service add to the pampering. The sleek lobby bar is considered one of the best in D.C. A small fitness center is open 24 hours a day, and guests can use one of two nearby full-service gyms (for a fee), one of which has a lap pool. Designed by David Rockwell (as was the bar), Decanter serves a fusion of Mediterranean flavors. There are also abundant dining options within walking distance.
