The Standard Hollywood Hotel Review: Hotelier André Balazs (Château Marmont, The Mercer in New York and Sunset Beach on Long Island) transformed a former retirement home on the Sunset Strip into an affordable and playful high-tech hotel for the hip --- and despite the name, it's far from standard. From late in the week to over the weekend, there's a DJ at the front desk playing lots of technopop music for the hipsters hanging out on the low-slung sofas in the lobby-lounge. Blue Astroturf surrounds the pool. The 139 guest rooms and two suites were designed by art director Shawn Hausman ("The People vs. Larry Flynt"), and the décor is best described as space-age, with such artsy touches as Andy Warhol print curtains. Amenities include T-1 Internet connection, cordless phones and speaker phones, and mini-bars stocked with the usual bottled drinks plus custom items such as licorice whips and saké. The hotel's 24-hour restaurant, 24/7, offers everything from a great burger to roast pork loin and wasabi pizza. Rudy's barbershop not only cuts and styles hair but also serves as the hotel's gift shop. Zip cars are available on-site. Like we said, The Standard is anything but standard!
