Sunset Tower Hotel Review: This hotel has a past as varied and star-studded as the city it inhabits. Designed in 1929, the Sunset Tower Hotel served as home to such luminaries as Howard Hughes, Marilyn Monroe and Frank Sinatra. The on-site restaurant, The Tower Bar, used to be Bugsy Siegel's apartment. For a while, the hotel was known as The Argyle, but a major renovation, which stripped away original Art Deco trappings and replaced them with a contemporary, subdued look, has returned it to the Sunset Tower Hotel once again. The restoration also eschewed modern Hollywood and its lack of subtlety for a mood honoring the decorum of yesteryear. Interior colors would be right at home in a classic old boys' club --- you won't find any pretense or ingratiating playfulness here. Instead, custom furnishings and artwork adorn suites and bedrooms, which are equipped with floor-to-ceiling windows, iPod stations and wireless high-speed Internet. Two penthouse apartments have enviable views, and the Argyle Salon & Spa boasts a traditional Turkish hammam. Every room is pet friendly and offers beds, bowls and treats, with a dog park close by where Fido can run off the leash.
