TownePlace Suites Riverwalk/Downtown Hotel Review: Once an old neighborhood bank building, this affordable, six-story, 117-suite Marriott is within easy walking distance of most of downtown's major landmarks, including the Alamo and River Walk just a few blocks away. The modern, comfortable lobby features an attractive lounge area, dining area and an interesting contemporary glass stairway to the courtyard. There is no on-site restaurant, but a complimentary continental breakfast includes cereals, fresh fruit, waffles, juice, breakfast sandwiches and a selection of doughnuts, pastries and fruit bars. The afternoon cocktail reception offers complimentary light fare, beer and wine. Suites have nice-sized desks, comfy bedding, separate areas for sleeping and working, and fully-equipped kitchens with full-size refrigerators, ovens, coffee makers, microwaves and eating utensils. Some suites have sofa beds. Due to street traffic during peak times, you may want to request an inside room. The on-site 24-hour In-a-Pinch Market sells snacks, beverages and sundries. Wi-Fi is free. Facilities include one 715-square-foot meeting room and a small indoor (open air) heated pool. Extended stays have access to 24/7 guest laundry. Pets are allowed with a non-refundable sanitation fee. Notable nearby fine dining restaurants less than a mile away include Biga on the Banks, Palm Restaurant Steakhouse and for a real splurge, The Fig Tree (jacket required), pricey but worth it.
