The Westgate Hotel Review

: The Westgate is an anachronism amid the modern boutique hotels that populate the current San Diego scene. Filled with nineteenth-century French furniture, authentic works of art and a grand staircase, this historic luxury hotel caters to guests in search of opulent accommodations. Everything that glitters is gold (or at least gilded), and a fair amount of the furnishings once belonged to a Louis. The mostly European staff is gracious and welcoming; nevertheless, an air of Old World formality pervades. Rooms are on the small side but well-furnished and equipped with modern conveniences including 32-inch color televisions, DVD players and Internet access. The Fontainebleau Room attempts to recreate the palace of Versailles; some find it incredibly romantic, others kitschy. While Chef Fabrice Hardel’s menu is old-school French, it utilizes the best in Southern California ingredients.
