The Westin Peachtree Plaza, Atlanta Hotel Review: Designed by John Portman, Atlanta's own architect, and built in 1976, the Westin Peachtree Plaza Hotel defines Atlanta's skyline. On this site sat the first governor's mansion, and later the Henry Grady Hotel. The property's 73 floors make it still the tallest hotel in America. Fenestration admitting natural light are signature Portman elements. A scenic glass elevator transports diners to the rotating Sun Dial restaurant to view dramatic, panoramic vistas of the city's skyline while dining. Upstairs, the Mose Davis Trio, a famed Atlanta jazz group, provides sophisticated entertainment. Glass replaced during renovations is more energy efficient, raising the hotel's eco-friendly rating to the silver level. Tasteful guest rooms and suites done in dignified earth tones feature floor-to-ceiling windows and signature Heavenly Beds. A spectacular all-weather outdoor pool on the eleventh floor sits beneath an arched ceiling with retractable glass panels. The fitness center was renovated in 2012. With 1,073 guest rooms, it's no surprise that this hotel has 80,000 square feet of meeting and event space for up to 2,500 people. Twenty-four hour room service and in-room spa services are notable luxuries. Within walking distance are Philips Arena, CNN Center and Centennial Olympic Park, among other venues; Portman-designed AmericasMart is adjacent. A short walk away, the Rialto Center for the Arts offers an intimate venue for classic concerts.
