Dr. Garth Fisher
Dr. Garth Fisher having a leisurely discussion with Sophie Gayot
Dr. Garth Fisher, world-renowned plastic surgeon and the first doctor selected for ABC’s "Extreme Makeover" series, sat down at Anisette restaurant with Sophie Gayot to discuss his start in the industry, his success, and his plans for the future.
Dr. Fisher initially intended on becoming an architect before he discovered his passion for plastic surgery. But isn’t that somewhat in the same spirit? Instead of designing your dream house, he does it for your face and body. After losing his father in the Vietnam War, he had to work as a janitor in a hospital—where his girlfriend’s father was a surgeon—to earn enough money to attend architectural school. "The surgeon saw something special in me," he said, "and introduced me to the world of surgery." Dr. Fisher found a real calling and decided to specialize in plastic surgery, as he enjoys making people happy and is a self-proclaimed "crazy perfectionist." He completed his internship, general surgery residency, and plastic surgery residency at the University of California at Irvine as well as further aesthetic/cosmetic fellowships and extensive training internationally.
The noted plastic surgeon's practice, located in Beverly Hills, concentrates on aesthetic/cosmetic plastic surgery of the face, nose and breast. He is the only surgeon in his practice, making the waiting list of elite clientele quite long—a list that includes entertainers, celebrities, business executives, and physicians from around the world. "Eighty percent of my clientele are women" he revealed, "but I turn down forty percent of these patients with surgeries I refuse to perform." Despite his hectic days, Dr. Fisher told Sophie that he works Monday through Friday, but leaves the office at 4:30pm to go home and take care of his daughters and wife.
Sophie hoped to extract the names of the A-list stars who Dr. Fisher has worked on, but the plastic surgeon kept his lips sealed, and instead told her he "never gives out names, only statistics." However, the doctor did divulge his refusal to say hello to patients out of the office, after having experienced an unfriendly encounter with a celebrity patient. The doctor recounted, "I had greeted a celebrity patient at a public Hollywood event and was rudely reprimanded for doing so. The famous patient called me right away from a hidden spot and said she did not want anyone to know she had plastic surgery and I should never address her in public again." Shocked by the confrontation, Dr. Fisher told Sophie that from then on, he decided never to address anyone in public unless otherwise solicited. Of course, he did not reveal the identity of the celebrity patient.
At the end of their leisurely conversation, Dr. Fisher said Sophie could ask him the most embarrassing question she could think of. But, due to his honest and straight-forward manner, Sophie knew all she needed to know about him and plastic surgery. She was pleased to learn that Dr. Fisher will introduce his own line of skin care products at the end of 2008, promising to leave skin looking gorgeous. The line will include a handful of very efficient products, packaged elegantly and priced affordably. Dr. Fisher is directing his years of experience and accumulated knowledge into his products so, as he says, "everyone should be able to have a good skin care."
Dr. Fisher has been featured throughout the media including ABC's "Oprah," NBC's "The Today Show," CNN, and Entertainment Tonight. He has appeared in People, Vogue, and Los Angeles Magazine, among others. Furthermore, he created and produced a series of informational DVDs on plastic surgery entitled, "The Naked Truth About Plastic Surgery" (www.garthfisher.com).
It seems that the surgeon who brought the young Garth Fisher into the surgery room with him had a bright vision. And on top of being an extremely talented doctor, Dr. Fisher is a charming gentleman!

|Sophie Gayot: What is your favorite hometown restaurant?
Dr. Garth Fisher: (Laughs) I'm from Laurel Mississippi, which is a very tiny town. My favorite restaurant there was Denny's, which was the only one there at the time. Now, it would probably be the Catfish Hut which is by now, probably the only other restaurant in Laurel!
