The
world of auto manufacturers rivals that of European royalty
in terms of confusing family trees. Car companies own bits
and pieces of each other, while others frequently share parts,
platforms and even entire cars. While a brand like Pontiac
is 100 percent General Motors, a company like Suzuki is independent
financially yet builds cars that are heavily based on GM products.
On the flip side, Toyota owns a stake in Subaru but has nothing
to do with its products...at least not yet. As we said, it's
confusing. We've broken this list down into several main umbrella
categories, with brands being associated through a combination
of actual product relation and percentage of company ownership.
