BMW to Launch All-Electric "Megacity" Vehicle - Car News

Following closely on the heels of Nissan, whose electric-powered Leaf is scheduled to hit showrooms in early 2011, BMW is preparing to launch its own series-production electric-drive model in 2013. Tentatively dubbed the Megacity Vehicle, this zero-emission urban car will also be the first production model to utilize carbon fiber-reinforced plastic, an ultra-light, ultra-strong composite material, as a major construction component. With its lightweight design and advanced lithium-ion battery-powered engine, the Megacity is expected to achieve a driving range suitable for even the largest of metropolitan areas. The Megacity is currently being developed as a part of Project i, BMW's alternative urban transportation research division, and is expected to be sold under a BMW sub-brand when it is released to the market in the not-too-distant future. Check back for more updates and information on the BMW Megacity as we approach the projected launch date of this unique all-electric vehicle.
