Toyota Partners with Microsoft for New Telematics System

Are you a Mac or a PC? If you plan on buying a Toyota electric vehicle or plug-in hybrid in the near future, you may just want to put yourself down as a PC. On April 6, 2011, the heads of Toyota and Microsoft met in Washington to announce plans to collaborate on a new Windows-based telematics system that could see limited release as early as next year. Aimed at competing with the likes of GM's OnStar and Ford Sync, the innovative new infotainment system will use Windows Azure's advanced "cloud-computing" platform to connect to a global network of information portals, allowing drivers to stream music, get directions and even manage energy use in battery-powered cars.

Although Toyota and Microsoft plan on spending an estimated $12 million over the next four years perfecting the system, the forward-thinking industry leaders hope to release a preliminary version of the software in 2012 models of the RAV4 EV and plug-in Prius. The cloud-computing platform, which not only eliminates the need for bulky hardware, but also allows vehicles to communicate with computers, mobile devices and other information sources, is especially useful in EVs and hybrids. By connecting to electric vehicle charging stations and the grid, the system can monitor energy consumption and schedule charging when rates are lowest.

While the software is still in its infancy, developers are already enthusiastic about future applications of the product. Looking beyond the auto industry, Microsoft is exploring the possibility of a similar home energy managing device. For now, though, keep an eye out for a smart new breed of vehicles that will be talking to the clouds as they take to the road.
