2008 Tesla Roadster ReviewElectrified Performance![]()
If hybrid technology is a stepping-stone to powering automobiles, hydrogen and electric (not to mention compressed air), are probably safe and clean alternatives. The engineers at Tesla stuck 6,831 laptop computer batteries to a three-phase, four-pole electric motor, and they cleared 60 mph in less than four seconds without a single engine sound. Celebrities have cued up to buy the promising roadster, and with many fancy and exotic cars reaching the $100,000 mark, we anticipate quite a few new auto aficionados will not be far behind. For now, there is one in Tony Stark’s garage of “Iron Man” fame. The “Governator” is marked down for one, and talk show host Jay Leno, famous for a collection of cars in his garage, has made room for one as well. To date, the 2008 models are already sold out, and over 1,000 Tesla Roadsters have been reserved in total. You'll have to wait for the 2009 Tesla Roadster, which will start at $109,000.
"There is great enthusiasm about the program, and we are also working on a prototype for a four-passenger sedan," says Elon Musk, founder, CEO and Chairman of Tesla Motors. The sedan, known as the Model S, will start at a more affordable $57,400, and will have a 160-mile range and a 45-minute recharge time. An optional battery capable of a range of 300 miles may also be offered. The automaker hopes to build 20,000 of the cars per year by mid-2012, with the first customers seeing deliveries in late 2011.
Warranty/Service: Four-year/100,000-mile warranty.
