2008 Volkswagen Touareg 2 V10 TDI Review

Epic Workhorse

A three-quarter front view of a 2008 Volkswagen Touareg 2 V10 TDI

In short: A powerful and feature-packed luxury SUV.

H
ere’s a Volkswagen that has no problem tackling rugged backroads. This voracious beast of a sport utility, tipping the scales at 5,825 pounds, matches its weight with brawn. The vehicle we drove was powered by a formidable 5.0-liter V10 diesel engine capable of exerting 553 lb-ft of torque. Treks off paved roads are easily handled by the Touareg 2’s four-corner air suspension, electronic stabilization program and permanent four-wheel drive. While capable of leaving civilization behind, this VW’s interior aims for luxury, pampering its inhabitants with a sunroof and heatable front seats. Our tester—which came standard with twelve-way power front seats, genuine wood interior accents and heatable, power exterior mirrors—included optional accessories such as a DVD-based navigation system and a rear-view backup camera.
