Burberry's "Bridle Check" tote, studded bangle and chain necklace |
Many a plaid Burberry scarf has been given and received as a present over the years, and when it comes to luxury gifts, Burberry accessories are amongst the most popular. The quintessentially British brand, founded by Thomas Burberry in 1856, has long been known for its classic, simple and utilitarian designs (Burberry invented gabardine, a water- and tear-resistant material used in clothing), as well as for the ubiquitous red, black, beige and white plaid pattern that has become Burberry’s trademark.

Burberry's dip dye gauze scarf |
Since the young British fashion designer Christopher Bailey took the creative helms at Burberry in 2001, the century-and-a-half-old label has undergone a subtle yet hugely effective facelift. The clean, preppy and proper image attached to Burberry has been slightly altered with injections of medieval-punk studs, spikes and metallic accents, especially in the recent Burberry Prorsum collections. The classic essence of the brand still remains, however, as the backbone to all of its designs.
Burberry’s revitalized look is most notably reflected in its expanding accessories line. Plaid (or check, as it's referred to in the United Kingdom), scarves can now be found in non-traditional treatments and finishes such as dip dye and crinkled shimmer. Studded bangles, masculine leather and chain cuffs, and jagged necklaces are part of a newly introduced jewelry collection. With exciting new looks like these, the prospect of gifting Burberry suddenly seems fresh again.
