It's easy to dismiss the South Beach Diet as another fad weight loss program simply because the name sounds so trendy. First Atkins, now this? Truth is, author and cardiologist Dr. Arthur Agatston has developed what may be one of the most heart-healthy programs out there. In his latest book, "The South Beach Heart Program," Agatston differentiates the traditionalist view of heart disease from the contemporary view—what he calls the "plumbing" versus "healing" approach. In doing so, he demystifies some of the biggest puzzles related to heart disease, including why seemingly healthy people get heart attacks, and why women are not actually at a lower risk for heart disease.

While the first half of the book details the workings of the cardiovascular system, the second half describes Agatston’s four-step South Beach Heart Program. This healthy plan includes following the well-known South Beach Diet, which emphasizes a balanced diet and eating foods such as omega-3-rich fish and olive oil, whole grains and antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables. Other chapters discuss preventative diagnostic tests and medications, and how to communicate problems and issues with a doctor as they occur. With these steps, Agatston claims that a person can significantly reduce his/her risk of heart disease and avoid dreaded procedures such as angioplasties and coronary bypasses.

It’s a lifestyle that most of us health-conscious foodies have already known about or are already following, but there is certainly no disadvantage to educating even more Americans about living a life of healthy eating, exercising and moderation.
