Yes Isn't Always a Good Thing
Yes Man Delivers Mediocre Laughs
After starring in such classic comedies as Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and Dumb & Dumber, Jim Carrey has certainly instilled high expectations in his audience. However, his most recent film, Yes Man, thoroughly disappoints. Although we will always have a soft spot for the illustrious funnyman who, for years, has been able to throw us into fits of uncontrollable laughter, this latest flick fails to recapture the heyday of Carrey's career. Based on the biographical book written by British author Danny Wallace, Yes Man, perhaps, should have just remained a novel.

Jim Carrey stars as Carl Allen, a man who leads a most mundane existence. His life takes a dramatic turn when he attends a self-help program that challenges him to say "yes" to everything and anything. This launches a multitude of seriously sticky situations for Allen, particularly a scene in which he must say yes to the flirtations of his much, much older neighbor. Although sweet and oftentimes silly, there is obvious substance missing in the film. Even Allen's relationship with the quirky Allison—played by Zooey Deschanel—lacks luster (perhaps it's the obvious age difference that downplays the seriousness of the romance). In the end, there are a few good chuckles, but nothing to write home about.
