Top 10 Films of 2011

On the surface, many of our favorite films of 2011 seem like rehashes of reliable Hollywood standbys: the buddy film, the family drama, and even a silent movie that harkens back to the early days of cinema. However, while the song may have remained the same in theaters over the past year, top filmmakers have been working with an entirely new quiver of instruments. Indie auteurs like Lars von Trier and Terrence Malick take an experimental approach to the well-worn themes of familial strife and existential despair in "Melancholia" and "The Tree of Life," respectively, displaying a keen painter's eye with their impressionistic imagery and masterful control of mise en scene. The crime drama goes goth in "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," an icy, atmospheric take on Stieg Larsson's best-selling novel. And for girls (and guys) who just wanna have fun, "Bridesmaids" proves that comedy is not the boys' club it often appears to be, providing the biggest cinematic laughs in recent memory. We don't mind if you disagree with our choices, as long as you've actually seen them. So, enjoy your popcorn and our Top 10 Films of 2011.
