The Expendables

When the "The Expendables" was released, it received some pretty scathing reviews and director Sylvester Stallone was even nominated for a Razzie Award for worst director. We, too, expected nothing but empty-headed cheese from this testosterone-packed blockbuster featuring a phalanx of aging action heroes. But we were in for a surprise. Seriously, though, how bad can a movie starring Sylvester Stallone (still-hot-in-that-He-Man-way) and Arnold Schwarzenegger and Mickey Rourke (deliciously gritty) and Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Jet Li and Bruce Willis really be? "The Expendables," a story about mercenaries on a mission to overthrow a brutal dictator, delivers old school fun with all of the classic clichés of its genre. Badasses, motorcycles, explosions? Check. Hot chicks, fight scenes, guns? Ditto. But somehow, with its muscled machismo and hilarious one-liners, this hard-hitting throwback to 1980s action movie filmmaking works splendidly for an entertaining evening in front of the screen.
