The Big Lebowski (1998)

The teachings of Jeffrey "the Dude" Lebowski have inspired college classes, books and fan-filled Lebowski Fests from coast to coast. This mistaken-identity tale by Joel and Ethan Coen finds Jeff Bridges as a Venice Beach stoner, bowler and prodigious drinker of "Caucasians" (the politically correct term for White Russians) up against one of LA's most powerful millionaires and a band of nihilistic thugs. Bridges fairly inhabits this other Jeff, but also look for star turns from John Goodman as the Dude's unhinged bowling buddy and Julianne Moore as an artist with a penchant for naked painting-cum-acrobatics, plus well-timed cameos by the legendary Sam Elliott as a mysterious cowboy-philosopher.
