Dominique Pinon in Delicatessen

Delicatessen; 1991

While most moviegoers are more familiar with Jean-Pierre Jeunet's 2001 Oscar-nominated "Amelie," we prefer this darkly funny film the director made ten years earlier (with co-writer and co-director Marc Caro). It's slapstick-y and very Jacques Tati-ish while also surreal and cerebral. The black post-apocalyptic comedy is set in an apartment building where the tenants occasionally wind up being served in the adjoining delicatessen... by the kilo. Even more than 20 years after its release, it has lost nothing of its wacky and whimsical charm.
