Henry Thomas stars as a boy who befriends an alien in E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial (1982)

After previously covering extra-terrestrial turf in "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," director Steven Spielberg again set his sights on the stars for this heart-warming story about a lonely boy and his unlikely friend. When a botched expedition to Earth leaves a gentle alien stranded and alone on an unfamiliar planet, it's up to ten-year-old Elliott (Henry Thomas) and his little sister Gertie (Drew Barrymore in her breakout role) to take care of it. Dubbing the alien "E.T.," Elliott introduces his newfound friend to the finer aspects of childhood in suburbia — Reese's Pieces, comic strips and trick-or-treating. However, with government agents on the hunt and E.T. growing sicker by the day, it quickly becomes apparent that the visitor must "phone home." The film's tear-jerking finale is awe-inspiring yet bittersweet, and ultimately speaks to the power of friendship — regardless of size, shape or planet.
