Woody Allen and Mariel Hemingway in Manhattan, one of GAYOT's Top 10 Romantic Movies

Manhattan
(1979)

Woody Allen’s "Manhattan," shot in gorgeous widescreen black-and-white, is the auteur’s nostalgic ode to his beloved New York City, the true romantic protagonist of this 1979 film starring Allen, Mariel Hemingway, Diane Keaton, Meryl Streep and George Gershwin’s "Rhapsody in Blue." At the time of its release, no one found issue with the film’s plot that revolves around a middle-aged writer (guess who plays him?) dating a teenager. It’s one of our absolute favorite Allen films and it’s totally romantic — not just for its "boy falls for girl" theme, but because of its timeless, sweeping music, beautifully stylized cityscape and unique, charmingly neurotic characters.
