The slew of sequels have cheapened the original (while garnering hundreds of millions of dollars), so it's easy to forget that "Saw" screened both at the prestigious Sundance and Toronto Film Festivals with a cast that included top-name actors Danny Glover and Cary Elwes. In this influential horror film, two men wake up to a nightmare — they've been kidnapped and chained — that proceeds to get worse and worse as they listen to recordings that explain how they can escape by following the rules of an oh-so-deadly game. Among the gruesome decapitation devices and buckets of blood, the motivation of the fiend behind it all is rather refreshing: people don't appreciate life enough.
