John Wayne in a scene from Rio Bravo

Rio Bravo (1959)

Plot: Director Howard Hawks and his star John Wayne loathed "High Noon" (one of our Top 10!), so they made a more feel-good, less artsy film about one sheriff John Chance who doesn't have to do the dirty work alone. He can rely on his fine deputies to deal with a situation involving an arrested murderer in his jail whom his henchmen are trying to free.

Perks: One of Quentin Tarantino's favorites, it's been called "a western for people who don't like westerns and a John Wayne movie for people who don't like John Wayne." Plus you get to hear Dean Martin croon a song or two. Thanks to "Rio Bravo," we will forever picture small town sheriffs looking like Wayne and alcoholic "Dudes" like Martin.
