Barcelona, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a city known for Antonio Gaudí’s magical modernist masterpieces — such as Casa Batlló, with its wave-like curvaceous balconies; fanciful Casa Milà, within mosaic-decorated Park Güell; and especially la Sagrada Família with its candle-dripping-like spires) — lures art and architecture aficionados, seafood and spa lovers alike.

The W Barcelona — known locally as “La Vela” (the Sail) because of its dramatic sail shape — has added a new architectural star to a city boasting structures by Mies van der Rohe, Frank Gehry and Richard Meier. From the W hotel, which opened in late 2009, the Mediterranean glistens through wall-to-wall windows overlooking the cruise ship-enhanced harbor and the cable car to Montjuïc, home of the 1992 summer Olympics. From the dining rooms, one can view the adjacent beach, where the sea laps near the hotel and hardy swimmers gather even in January. Sleep-deprived Spaniards (dinner starts at 11 p.m.) and beauty-bound Barcelonans are among the international sophisticates flocking to the hotel’s ground floor where familiar Bliss-blue accessories sparkle in this, the first Bliss spa outpost in Europe.

Reachable from the lobby and, unfortunately, from an outdoor, harbor-front, public plaza, the 7,500-square-foot duplex space has an upbeat and contemporary ambience. Bliss Spa features eight treatment rooms, two manicure and two pedicure nail stations, a wet area with steam and sauna and an indoor swimming pool. Comforting men’s and women’s lounges are available for post-treatment relaxation. Bliss Barcelona, like all Bliss spas, offers its famed, result-oriented facial and body treatments. Trademark touches appear on the walls, in the product line in the retail boutique, in packaging and in-room amenities. Naturally, the spa menu is expectedly vast and thorough and we savored a post-flight massage. Also featured is the spa’s most famous red-carpet indulgence, the Triple Oxygen Treatment, as well as anti-aging treatments, special facials for men and cellulite treatments, an essential for Europeans.
