If you think that Grand Hyatt Hong Kong is only a magnet for corporate travellers on expense accounts, think again. Since the advent of the award-winning Plateau Residential Spa in 2006, this luxury hotel has also been attracting attention of a different type: honeymooning couples, those celebrating their wedding anniversaries, spa party types as well as male business travellers seeking a place to recuperate from jetlag. After all, there is no better place to sink into nirvana than in your own Residential Spa after a relaxing spa treatment. And Plateau Spa is arguably the most original arrival to hit this high-paced city, with its unique concept of sleeping in your own spa treatment room.

Tucked away on the entire eleventh floor of the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Hong Kong, the 80,000-square-feet Plateau Spa was built at a cost of U.S. $10 million. The result is fourteen Residential Spa rooms with harbor-view terraces that are custom-designed for basic spa treatments and another nine spa treatment rooms for day guests as well as for procedures that the Residential Spas are unable to accommodate (such as facials and body treatments).

Upon entering a Residential Spa room, there is the impression of stepping into a petite "ryokan" in Japan. In place of a king size bed is a nice, thick and extremely comfortable futon overlaid with Egyptian cotton duvet. Instead of an armchair or loveseat is a Japanese-style low table with two low legless chairs. Even the branded Oolong and Jasmine teabags are missing and replaced by herbal tea served out of a zen-like glass teapot. Smartly designed built-in closets and cabinets take the place of walk-in wardrobes. A glass-screened, see-through shower stall sits boldly at a corner of the sassafras wood panelled room, entered by stepping over a knee-high divider into an intimidatingly huge Royal Mahogany granite tub. We suspect the latter is greatly under-utilized, unless one knows how to manipulate the many fixtures and jets. Rest assured, however, that the lovely Aesop toiletries will complete your shower experience.

Yearning for a treatment with your companion on the very futon bed where you'll fall into slumber? A Plateau Massage is provided on the house for up to two stay-in guests as part of the Residential Spa experience. After an energizing rain shower, your bodies will be ready to soak up the goodness of the 60-minute Plateau Massage. Choose from relax, flow, detox or tonic massage balms and enjoy the combination of Thai, Shiatsu and Swedish strokes. Guests who wish to have another treatment from the spa menu are welcome to make the switch at no cost if the preferred treatment is of equal value to a Plateau Massage.

After a good night's sleep, you'll wake up bright and chirpy for breakfast. Plateau Suite and Terrace guests have the option of enjoying a healthy Plateau Healthy Breakfast in the comfort of their terrace, or in the outdoor Courtyard on the eleventh floor. For those who enjoy the indulgence of a butler-assisted buffet breakfast, the pleasure is yours at the Grand Hyatt Club Lounge, situated at the penthouse level atop the Grand Hyatt Hotel.
