Earthy Contemporary, Maui-Style

Located on the northern end of Ka'anapali Beach, The Westin Ka'anapali Ocean Resort Villas feels worlds away from its sister property, The Westin Maui Resort & Spa. At the Villas, it’s quieter and calmer, and the sprawling, spacious grounds—26 oceanfront acres—make the resort seem less crowded. The Heavenly Spa here, which opened in May 2008, also has a completely different attitude. Think modern-contemporary, with earthy island touches, and of course, special treatments you will only find here.

The 10,000-square-foot facility offers plush, yet organic surroundings. Dark wood furniture complements the light bamboo floors; black and white gallery-style photography of tropical flora and fauna line the walls, while swaths of brightly-colored Hawaiian-print fabric add a shot of color to the all-white massage beds. Most stunning is the two-story floor-to-ceiling light fixture that imitates, if you think about it, the Westin’s famous rain showers. The scent of pure, virgin coconut oil, which is used in a number of treatments, fills the air and lends an instant reminder that you are on a tropical island.

Hawaiian-style treatments are the highlights here, and examples include the Lomilomi Massage—a traditional healing massage where practitioners use their hands and forearms in rhythmic and flowing patterns—and Liliko'i Fruit Melody, which involves a tantalizing sugar cane and Hawaiian passion fruit scrub followed by a decadent body wrap with liliko'i body butter. The Hawaiian "Pōhaku" Hot Stone Massage is deeply relaxing. Warmed basalt stones are used during the massage, and the effect is quite therapeutic, perfect for achy backs. The warmth from the smooth stones helps penetrate sore and tight muscles, and, when used in combination with a balm derived from the Polynesian tamanu tree, will leave you soothed and ready to face the rest of the day.

Couples will enjoy the different massage options, all conducted in one of their three couples suites. The Kā'anapali Couples Ritual Massage starts with a tandem massage and ends with a luxurious coconut crème and frangipani milk bath for two. The Couples Heavenly Romance is perfect for honeymooners, and includes a side-by-side lomilomi massage, a candlelit aromatherapy bath, plus fresh fruit and a split of Champagne. The tree house cabana is the largest of the couples suites, and features a relaxing open-air indoor-outdoor setting.

There are a total of 13 treatment rooms, including massage, hydrotherapy and steam rooms. Other traditional spa treatments are also available, including facials, body wraps, spa manicures and pedicures, and also waxing services. While there is no sauna or whirlpool bath available, the eucalyptus steam room more than makes up for it. The scented steam adds an invigorating pick-me-up to the usual spa experience—you might have to drag yourself away to get to your treatment—or to the beach—on time.
