Soothing Bliss Awaits

by Gail Jennings

Spa Olakino

In Hawaii, its easy to overindulge and end up with sunburn, windburn and overexposure to the elements. Visitors forget that sunscreen should be applied even for a stroll through Waikiki—never mind the vigilance required for a few hours at the beach or on the water. Fortunately, the lovely (and conveniently located) Spa Olakino at the Waikiki Beach Marriott has developed lavish treatments specifically designed to soothe those tender faces and bodies. The Sun Soothing Facial and the Sun Soothing Wrap—which utilize aloe, cucumber, and green tea—will bring nearly instant relief to abraded skin, leaving you looking and feeling wonderful.

Spa Olakino is part of the highly-regarded Paul Brown group, and as a full-service spa and salon, offers an extensive menu of body, face, hair and beauty treatments and services. Enhancing the experience is the use of natural Hawaiian ingredients like volcanic ash, Kona coffee, fresh papaya and pineapple, 'awa (kava), limu and kukui nut in many of the services. A unique offering rarely found in a Waikiki spa is an air-spray tan booth—30 minutes and no one will know that you didn't spend hours in the sun for that golden glow. Couples should consider the Honi Package, which includes lomi lomi massages, pedicures, and honey, milk and 'awa wraps. The treatments are done side-by-side in a special couples room, which includes a steam shower with an inviting view of Waikiki Beach.

Saving the best for last, visitors can spend the day at the spa indulging in the "Olakino Experience." The luxurious 5-hour package (which includes lunch) begins with a Hawaiian salt foot wash followed by the Magic Island massage, which incorporates elements of Thai, shiatsu, lomi lomi and reflexology. Next comes a delicious (yes, you could eat it!) pineapple and papaya body scrub and a Hawaiian spirulina and aloe body wrap. The final treat is an aromatherapy facial. Now, that's the way to relax in paradise.
