Clean and calming Calgary is a gorgeous getaway and an ideal place to find a special urban spa. It's a city with a pristine river running through it, as well as hundreds of kilometers of walking and cycling paths and chic cafés along a pedestrian 8th Avenue. The views from Calgary Tower from the ice-capped Canadian Rockies to the Pengrowth Saddledome are spectacular. Adjacent to the stadium are the world-famous Stampede Grounds, and diagonally across the street—in an up-and-coming neighborhood called Victoria Park—is the city's newest spa. Liv Spa opened in January 2008 on the second floor of the newly built 36-story residential tower called Arriva.

The modern spa feels comfortable rather than cool and larger than its 8,000-square-foot facility with its 9 to 10-foot ceilings, earth tones, deep woods, dark tiles, grey stone countertops, off-white walls and frosted glass panels. Splashes of the spa's signature blue add a distinctive note of color.

Along with twelve treatment rooms—including one with a Vichy shower, one dedicated to Thai massage, five multipurpose massage and facial rooms (we recommend the signature caviar facial)  and another for nail care—there's a fitness room with True equipment, a Yoga/Pilates room and his/her locker rooms with rain showers. The spacious coed lounge is furnished with chaise longues and oversized chairs with ottomans covered in a silky soft white fabric. "The whole point is for people to put their feet up and relax," notes Linda Tran, the twenty-something owner who is both a massage therapist and aesthetician. The spa boasts Calgary's first indoor Mineral pool. It's a coed, ten-square-foot jet tub in which French sea water powder adds minerals that contain about 100 nurturing trace elements.

The Signature Jade Stone Massage—60 ($150) or 90 minutes ($195)—uses pure jade stones from Southeast Asia, which heat quickly and cool quickly, shocking the body to promote circulation. The traditional massage uses 20 stones so the time wasted heating and moving up to 60 (black) stones is better spent on massaging the body. Another great treatment is their signature caviar facial. After treatments, it's a treat to go downstairs to Olives, the ground floor destination restaurant and nibble for wine, Mediterranean cuisine and, of course, an array of olives.
