“The
sea is the greatest source of riches for your body.
At every level, the sea inspires another kind of journey…a
journey to a newly energized body and reawakened soul…”
So begins the brochure for Loews
Coronado Bay Resort’s Sea Spa, a 10,000 square
foot spa that includes 14 treatment rooms, a private
fitness studio, sauna, steam and relaxation rooms and
beauty salon. Our soul just so happened to need some
reawakening…and so we booked a day to discover
what the sea has to offer…
The
mood at Loews Coronado Bay Resort is one of convenience
and friendliness. Forget your typical stuffy luxury
hotels — this is a place that lacks pretension,
without sacrificing excellent service. Upon arrival,
we were met with a host of smiling faces; the mostly
young and eager staff took care of our every need, quickly
getting us checked in and down to the spa for a seriously
decadent day.
Despite
its spacious 10,000 square feet, Sea Spa feels cozy.
Each area is smartly sectioned off, creating intimacy.
Our favorite spot was the relaxation room. Perfect for
pre- and post-treatment chilling on the comfortable
rattan chairs with overstuffed cushions and ottomans.
Sip freshly-made fruit smoothies, mineral water accented
with blood orange slices or hibiscus iced tea while
you catch up with the latest Vogue or W magazines. The
décor deftly mixes modern and English Colonial
design. The many windows permeate the room with natural
light. The staff here is warm, subtly creating the feeling
of a day with friends.

Spa’s signature treatment is the Beach Stone Healing
massage. Tired and spent when we went in, this combination
of warmed beach stones, coconut oil and traditional
hand massage delivered — the stones radiate heat
through pressure points and feel whimsical fitted between
your fingers and toes. The Deep Blue massage is also
great for releasing body tension and relaxing the mind.
Go for the watsu (water shiatsu) for a unique hydro-experience,
or get that lovin’ feeling with the Coastal Couple — side
by side massages of your choice.
Other
treatments not to miss are the Pacific enzyme facial
(using mud derived from the deep sea), the Vichy hydrokinetic
shower treatment (get drenched by five adjustable overhead
showerheads) and the seaweed body masque (rich in iodine,
to rev up your metabolism).
After
a spell in the sauna, our body (and yes…our soul)
really did feel newly energized and reawakened. We considered
taking a tai chi or belly dancing class at the adjoining
fitness center, but instead opted for a long shower
and a trip to Mistral for the resort’s culinary
delights.
