Toddlers building sand castles on the beach, sisters swinging tennis rackets on the courts, tweens teetering on a log in the lake, teens getting their first facial in the spa: these and countless other activities are part of family fun time at Mohonk Mountain House, the majestic, family-owned and operated hotel which opened in 1869 and is idyllically located 90 miles north of Manhattan outside the college town of New Paltz, New York. Among the gracious 265 rooms of the turreted, stone and gabled castle-like resort hotel, some offer fireplaces, sitting areas and balconies that overlook 125 summer houses built above and around the pristine, mile-long, 60-foot deep Lake Mohonk. This "Lake in the Sky" is home to several of the resort's water activities, such as canoeing, paddle boating, rowboating, kayaking and a swimming area. Other accommodations face landscaped gardens and the verdant valley that seems to stretch to infinity along the edge of the sprawling Shawangunk Ridge.

The 2,200-acre resort hotel parcel includes a gorgeous golf course and 85 miles of hiking trails; the land abuts the forever-wild, 6,400 acre Mohonk Preserve. Year-round offerings include horseback riding, carriage rides, rock climbing, ice-skating, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and, of course, the full-service spa, fitness center and stunning indoor swimming pool.

While parents can relax with treatments at The Spa at Mohonk Mountain House—the retreat’s recently opened, multi-level relaxation location—the younger generation can participate in the Mohonk Kids’ Club, which introduces eco-friendly activities, as well as the Junior Naturalist Experience, which offers a hands-on approach to nature for children ages 4-12.

There are offerings at the salon and spa for youngsters, too. Salon services are available for children over 6, such as "For Me Too!" manicures and pedicures. Guests 16 and older can partake in the spa's "Simple Pleasures for Teens." The 25-minute "Teen Care Facial" and "Teen Clearing Facial" are especially designed to teach about skin care as well as to cleanse, exfoliate and moisturize youthful skin. Teenagers can also experience the fragrant 25- or 50-minute "Lavender Massage" for the ultimate relaxation.

Lunch is served buffet-style so kids can choose their own dishes, and the new, healthful children's menu delights with tempting, yet familiar, favorites. Choices include fizzy all-natural 7Up fruit cocktail, New York cheddar cheese hearts, breaded 'n' baked chicken strips and a grilled steak kabob made with filet mignon, pineapple wedges and cherry tomatoes.

Whatever the season and whatever the weather, the sprawling and spacious 30,000-square-foot, light-filled spa awaits the entire family with pleasures galore. But spagoers who desire a break from their kids, or children in general, may want to choose a different destination.
