A Ritual Bath at the Pink Palace

Having recently visited the Alhambra in Granada, Spain, we were more aware than during prior visits of how closely the Boca Raton Resort replicates the regal Spanish hilltop icon. This waterfront estate sprawls from its main building to a high-rise tower (yes, with superb views from Cielo, its excellent top-floor restaurant) and across to the golf club. Sleek yachts dock at the marina behind the hotel, and a ramp leads to the classic teak launch, which transports guests across to the far bank of the Intracoastal Waterway where we stayed at the oceanfront Beach Club. Our room and terrace faced its pools and the Atlantic Ocean.

The legendary architect Addison Mizner designed the prestigious pink palace — now part of The Waldorf Astoria Collection — some 80 years ago, and it’s been a glamorous getaway ever since. From the first view of its tall arched doorways and balustrades at the end of a palm-bordered road, the vista hints that there are soaring ceilings, pointed arched windows and marble floors within. The recently-built Spa Palazzo addition continues the Moorish architectural theme with a gracious high-ceilinged lounge, huge windows and door, porticos, wooden furnishings and an enticing outdoor pool set, Spanish-style, inside an inner patio. Spa Palazzo delivers a complete menu of spa cuisine to guests who dine poolside; there are salads, wraps, Go-Go blends and even a bento box luncheon.

Top aestheticians and massage therapists offer a complete line of treatments; there’s a varied menu for men and even special maternity massages. The signature 50-minute Palazzo Ritual Bath is offered as a prelude to any treatment; for us, it preceded Caviar facials. First, we were led down a long hallway past the sauna and steam room and some delicious fruit and vegetable crudités. We entered the Roman bath and looked up at the high, tented-top space, which features columns at each corner of the rectangular whirlpool centerpiece. Around the edge of the space, touching the exterior walls, there is an array of individual soaking tubs, Vichy-style showers and plunge tubs with showers. The various water temperatures are designed to calm, relax and ready the body to receive a treatment’s maximum benefit. The resident concierge tends to each guest to ensure everyone is enjoying the sybaritic ambience.

While the spa is a great destination especially for mother/daughter retreats or gal-pal getaways, the resort is also a family destination and spa packages can be customized. Parents often schedule treatments while their kids are in day camp.
