The Spa at The Chedi - Spa Review
On the River's Edge

With
a minimalist, white façade, the exterior
of The Spa at The Chedi, Chiang Mai seems uninviting
at first. But venture beyond its nondescript exterior
and you’ll be impressed. Instead of having
to change in group locker rooms, clients are whisked
away to cozy treatment rooms with teakwood walls,
terrazzo bathtub, shower room and a black granite
vanity top. The therapists are blessed with good
touch and a genuinely cheerful disposition—both
reflect the spa’s strong focus on training
and the resort’s devotion to gracious living.
The Chedi, Chiang Mai hotel is a newcomer to the
northern Thai city of Chiang Mai. It sits right
on the banks of the Mae Ping River and oozes both
minimalist design and historic charm.
Our
three-hour spa journey began with an aromatherapy
foot polish using rock sea salt infused with sweet
almond and lemongrass essential oil, sure to smooth
away calluses. After a change into a stylish Thai
pajama, we met with Khun Natcharee, an extremely
qualified therapist with several years of hospital
physiotherapy experience under her belt. Her assertive
hands stretched our body and worked pressure points
to help rebalance the flow of chi. Aromatherapy
eye pillows added to the relaxation, protecting
our eyes from the glare of the indirect sunlight
streaming in from the floor-to ceiling-window.
After
another wardrobe change into a sarong, a heated
herbal poultice therapy completed the body treatment,
helping to expel any remaining muscle tension.
A very delightful traditional Thai facial treatment
followed using only natural ingredients and no
commercial products: yogurt to cleanse, water
melon juice to remove make-up, cucumber to tone,
brown sugar to scrub, honey to massage the face
and egg white as a facial mask. Afterwards, we
enjoyed a drink infused with lemongrass, lime,
lemon, orange slice and spearmint herb in the
relaxation lounge. Here, beyond the reeds providing
privacy to spa guests at the lounge area, catch
a glimpse of the nonchalant pace of life by the
Mae Ping River.
