We located Paris' newest sumptuous subterranean spa, U Spa, on the lower level of the ultra-chic Parisian palace hotel: Hôtel Fouquet's Barrière. The haute Art Déco hotel entry is on the couture boutique-lined Avenue George V (opposite the new Louis Vuitton boutique) close to the corner of the Champs Elysées—where the original Le Fouquet's restaurant has been a Parisian landmark since 1898. When this assemblage of buildings encircling a courtyard opened in November 2006, it reportedly cost over half a billion dollars. Some of its 107 glamorous, sound-proof rooms (or suites) in this Jacques Garcia-designed retreat face the glorious Champs Elysées and the Arc de Triomphe; others view the Eiffel Tower. High-tech features include televisions that either emerge from the foot of the bed and turn 360 degrees or feature mirrored screens to TVs in the bathrooms that operate with waterproof remotes.

U Spa, a serene, contemporary hideaway surrounding the city’s largest indoor pool is all golden with reflected light from the water, slinky slate and gilt appointments. Sensuous textures—precious velvets, silks, embroidered leathers, mahogany and tourmaline—prevail while wooden columns and floor-to-ceiling curtains divide the space. We swam laps in one pool and played, childlike amidst bubbles, jets and waterfalls within a lavish water circuit called an "aqua slimming trail." Giggles and gaiety added to the water's warmth as we moved from one venue to another. Afterward, wearing lush robes, we reclined on cushy couches and were served tea before and after personalized Terraké ritual services.

Each treatment takes place in impeccably detailed and individually shaped rooms. The Red Liana Slimming Wrap before the massage features a Peruvian paste made of berries. The Primeval Sea facial, utilizes mineral-rich red seaweed and marine extracts. A deluxe two-night spa package—fittingly named "Sparis"—includes a choice of two signature Terraké treatments and a 40 minute personal training session with the hotel’s fitness expert in the sleek fitness facility. Also included is a"Fitness Breakfast": (hot drinks, organic egg white omelet, fresh fruit or vegetable juices, dried fruits, soy milk and low-fat or soy yogurt and breads) and a "Fitness Lunch" (such as a smoked chicken and endive salad with pecan vinaigrette or a fresh crab salad). "Sparis" guests receive a Terraké gift kit containing an exfoliant, detox gel, vitamin-rich cream and the choice of a mask or serum
