"The Ritual of Two" Couples' Treatment

As hopeless romantics, we can indulge our senses and celebrate our relationships on Valentine’s Day by being pampered together within a luxurious couple’s spa suite. It’s fairly easy to find a spa with a posh and private room reserved for twosomes; all have twin massage tables, most have soaking tubs, many have en suite showers, some include lavatories and a few offer indoor and outdoor lounging areas.

At Willow Stream, The Spa at The Fairmont Scottsdale Princess, the sensual suite has it all plus access from the patio to the Meditation Garden, where there’s seating around a small—albeit soothing—round waterfall. Here, the architectural design and materials—with authentic hand-carved and hand-laid Sedona sandstone walls—pay tribute to Havasupai Falls, a hidden oasis at the Grand Canyon. Red rocks line the high walls adjacent to the 42-step staircase that descends alongside a landscaped stream from the 11,000 square foot roof-top Mesa Level (with its cabanas and 60 by 21.5 foot pool) to the lower Oasis Level. The descent, on foot, is reminiscent of hiking in an Arizona canyon. The Oasis Level—which is also accessible via elevator—is where we sit under the warm cascading waters of the Waterfall Treatment Pool in the Meditation Garden, and where we find locker rooms that offer a Eucalyptus Inhalation Room (for women) and flat screen TVs (for men) in the MVP room.

The 44,000-square-foot spa rises from Hacienda Plaza, one of many plazas on this Spanish Colonial style resort campus, replete with lush cactus and flower gardens, a golf course and the majestic backdrop of Arizona’s Mc Dowell Mountain. With a design featuring nature’s essential elements—air, water, earth, wood and fire—plus innovative treatments, the spa is designed to rejuvenate and re-energize.

The Ritual of Two ($599) offers a 120-minute, side-by-side treatment for two in the spacious couple’s suite. The suite includes a specialty tub with room for two, a private shower with two rainforest showerheads and a private sitting area on the patio. First, the therapist teaches the couple how to use sensual muds, masks and bath products and then leaves the couple alone to give each other a spa treatment. Later, two therapists arrive to give 60-minute, choreographed aromatherapy massages. What a happy Valentine’s Day!
