Jurlique
Beauty with a Cause
by Sylvie Greil

We grew up with Mom's fanatic devotion to Clarins, Chanel, Clinique, Biotherme et al. In those days there was no Sephora, you couldn't get a decent shower gel at the drugstore and the skin care market was in the hands of a few French masterminds. We have come a long way. We still love our old, trusty friends, but we have made new acquaintances. Case in point: Jurlique.

We suspected a sophisticated line behind the very French name, and imagine our surprise when it turned out that Jurlique originates with a German doctor, Jurgen Klein (PhD). Now, Germans seem to have never moved beyond Nivea in the eyes of the beauty-obsessed public, but you must admit German standards for tools, cars, design etc. are generally pretty immaculate. Same is true with Jurlique. In fact, "Jurlique" is a composite of Dr. Klein's first name (add the Jur) and his wife Ulrike's (lique). Et Voilà.

The Kleins drew from Germany's long history of aromatherapy, herbalism, homeopathy and alchemy to come up with skin care that promotes not just glowing skin but a healthy body. Their search for the perfect environment in which to grow their herbs and plants took them to the rolling hills surrounding Adelaide in South Australia.

The Jurlique line is best explored via a facial. You'll fill out a form as long as at the doctor's, in order for the aesthetician to best evaluate your general health, skin and vices (Do you smoke? Drink? Caffeine?). At the end of a very soothing treatment you're presented with a "prescription." It may sound like this:

Daily Jurlique Skin Nurturing Ritual:

Begin your morning with gentle compresses of water and essentials oils (depending on your constitution that could be lavender, chamomile-rose or pine needles) to soften the dead skin cells; then slough them off via the Ultra-Sensitive Face Wash. Before you moisturize, with Calendula Cream (fabulous if you have allergies, eczema or dry skin), lip balm and Eye Gel, enjoy a spritz of Pure Rosewater Freshener (hundreds of roses required for this delicious item). The evening holds a similar regimen. We love the Herbal Recovery Mist. Made of 100% Bio-Intrinsic extracts, they work with the body's elimination and re-hydrating processes during sleep.

Follow these steps for two weeks and, without exaggeration, large pores, red and dry areas and breakouts are a matter of the past!
