Ojai, an artsy community known as California's "Shangri-La," is an ideal destination for a low-key getaway, thanks to its lovely weather (high 70s in the winter, 80s in the summer), bucolic setting and quaint downtown. Here, the casual, family-run The Oaks at Ojai destination spa focuses on wellness and fitness with services that range from acupressure massages and aromatherapy to yoga, Pilates, Tai Chi, Qi Gong, water workouts and cardio classes. It's the kind of place where you won't need expensive bikinis, designer sunglasses and a face full of makeup; sunscreen and functional workout clothes will do just fine. You'll be surrounded by friendly folks who, too, have come here to get in shape, lose weight or just leave their stresses behind for a weekend. Between activities such as hula-hooping or exploring the scenic local mountains on a moderate or advanced hike, guests lounge by the pool, detox in the eucalyptus steam room or enjoy traditional pampering spa services such as anti-aging facials and massages. The Oaks at Ojai offers 46 rooms for a minimum two-night stay as well as special package deals. In keeping with the fitness goal, the spa promotes 1,200 calories per day “conscious eating” via healthy spa cuisine (raw veggies, high-potassium veggie soup, seafood and lemon water), without added salt or sugar. One look at founder Sheila Cluff, still going strong in her 70s, and you'll have no trouble buying into the program!
