Story of O, the 1954 S&M classic by Pauline Reage

We once heard that if a girl wears a ring like O’s, dominants anywhere in the world would recognize her to be willing to be tormented in the manner "O" was in this elegant S&M fantasy. We deliberately wrote "tormented," although the proper term of course is "dominated," as the heroine is whipped, branded, pierced, and abused, albeit voluntarily. Published in uptight 1954, the book was banned in some places yet received literary awards and sits today on a list of national triumphs in France. Many assumed for a long time that it was written by a man, for no woman would dream up such scenes of debasement and depravity. In fact, it was created by a Frenchwoman who wrote under a pseudonym and who didn’t fess up to her authorship until 40 years later!
