El Secreto Hotel Review: From the moment guests are picked up in San Pedro and transported by boat to El Secreto resort on Ambergris Caye, the escape from reality begins. In a gorgeous island setting, complete with private beachfront, thirteen freestanding thatch-roofed villas blend rustically elegant South Pacific and Caribbean styles. Three are just steps from the sea, four offer tranquil garden views and five surround the resort’s saltwater lake; they all, though, share much in common, from carpentry handcrafted by local artisans to a wealth of amenities, including flat-screen LCD TVs, marble bathrooms, private outdoor Jacuzzis with enclosed outdoor showers, private decks with hammocks, Melita coffee and tea makers, iPod docking stations, complimentary Wi-Fi and much more. In addition, the superlative IKAL Spa Villa adds a private double massage cabin, steam room and freshwater pool. There are also spa beach cabanas and two spa towers where guests can enjoy treatments such as the Spiritual Cleansing Ritual and signature bamboo and hot sea shell massages. For dining, international cuisine is infused with the flavors of Belize, and dishes incorporate ingredients grown right on the grounds. Numerous complimentary services are offered, including daily breakfast, yoga, meditation sessions, bicycle rentals, sailboat and kayak use and shuttles to and from San Pedro. While relaxation is the name of the game at El Secreto, there is plenty on offer for active travelers. Guests can try cave tubing, zip lining and reef fishing, or embark on a helicopter tour over the Thousand Foot Falls. Nearby Mayan sites include the Altun-Ha temples and ancient city of Lamanai. And for divers, the barrier reef is just ten minutes from the resort’s dive center, and the legendary Blue Hole is only two hours away.
