The Gleneagles Hotel Review: If you know golf, then you know Gleneagles. What you might not know is everything in between. Set on 850 acres, the 1924 design mimics a French chateau. There are 232 bedrooms and 26 suites. Amanda Rosa designed the suites that take a contemporary spin, though walking through the corridors feels more like a Jesuit seminary with hardwood floors (that creak) and classic touches. Grounds are immaculately landscaped and several vantage points give you ample opportunity to take in the scenery, or the falconry displays often showcased on the surrounding lawns. Gleneagles is also home to top Scottish chef, Andrew Fairlie whose restaurant of the same name consistently rates highly with worldwide gourmands. Deseo (which translates to 'whatever you desire') a Mediterranean food hall restaurant was unveiled in 2007, its concept an informal and fun option. Hard to believe Gleneagles sits in the middle of the Scottish countryside when you walk into the ultra modern Spa by ESPA. The sleek design seems like it belongs in New York. One is greeted by techno lounge music and a black vitality pool lit by fibre optics. Then, there is the golf. In 1993, the PGA Centenary Course, a Jack Nicklaus design, opened to complement the famous King's and Queen's courses and form a trifecta of the world's best golfing venues. Complementing the recreation program, guests can partake in shooting clay targets, fly fishing, off-road driving in Land Rovers, discover the ancient art of falconry, learn to ride sidesaddle at the Equestrian School or work with the resort's gundogs. As well, large-scale business and corporate events take place at Gleneagles on a regular basis (think masked balls, the 2005 G8 Summit and ulta-important conferences).
