 Those seeking comfortable opulence may think they've died and gone to heaven. This 380-room, beachfront hotel is sold out most of the time, and it's no wonder. The open-air lobby is one of the most splendid in the islands, with a marble fountain and a smashing view of the pool area and beach. Accommodations, fresh from a 2007 makeover at a cost of $50 million, are attractively decorated in sophisticated shades of beige with subtle island flair. All rooms open onto private lanais and have resplendent marble bath facilities enhanced by fine toiletries, including aromatherapy bath products. Most of the rooms have ocean views. The hotel is located on fifteen beautifully landscaped acres along Wailea Beach, but most guests prefer to lounge poolside in a complimentary cabana, where they can be spritzed with Evian water every so often by the attentive pool staff. Families will appreciate the extra attention given to children, and there's an excellent kids' program. Other notable features include a fitness room, tennis courts, a game room, and a salon and spa, just to name a few. The restaurants are critically acclaimed, especially Spago, the resort's flagship, fine-dining restaurant with a California menu by star chef Wolfgang Puck. DUO, the resort's signature restaurant, focuses on an array of prime cuts of steak, including Japanese Kobe beef, as well as fresh seafood.
