A storied hotel fondly known as The Pink Palace of the Pacific, The Royal Hawaiian abounds with tales from decades of history as the lodging of choice. Among the little-known facts: During World War II, the U.S. Navy essentially took over the hotel, reserving it for submarine crews to use for R&R between dangerous war patrols. The Navy wanted the best possible accommodations for its personnel taking the gravest risks. Of course, the Navy had far fewer options to choose from back then, but such rich history is now part of why The Royal Hawaiian continues to be a stand-out. The original 1927 Spanish-Moorish hotel, with its garden and ocean-view rooms and suites was once the tony playground of Hollywood celebs like Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks. The property underwent a major overhaul in 2008 and still features its trademark pink, now combined with modern Hawaiian and Asian influences. The 592-room resort offers 35 suites including 18 oceanfront and six two-story suites. Nothing about the property lacks for only-in-Hawaii charm. The Royal Hawaiian Luau, the only beachfront luau in Waikiki, features the pulsating songs and dances of Polynesia and is held each Monday night on the ocean lawn. Dining options include the oceanfront Azure restaurant and the busy Mai Tai Bar, which serves up majestic views of Waikiki Beach and Diamond Head. The world-famous Mai Tai cocktail is reputed to have had its beginning here. |
