| The Palms Cliff House Inn can make for a welcome change from the gargantuan resorts on the Kona side of the Big Island. Perched over the Hamakua Coast, about a twenty-minute drive north of Hilo town, this lavish Victorian-styled lodging is known for its gourmet cooking. Each of the inn's eight rooms has a private bathroom and lanai, ceiling fans, satellite TV, mini refrigerator, Italian lace-trimmed sheets and yoga mats for guests to use. Extra amenities, such as carved marble fireplaces and whirlpool baths, are provided in some suites. It's important to note that only the upper floor suites have air-conditioning and all units are non-smoking. The hosts are unobtrusive, preferring to let the gorgeous oceanfront setting take center stage. Nights are peaceful here, while day trippers have easy access to 440-foot-high Akaka Falls and the spectacular Waipio Valley farther north, as well as a petite four-mile scenic drive detour to the south that passes by the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden. |
