| Far from the small town of Kaunakakai and the Hoolehua airport, there is nothing more remote or peaceful that this comfortable retreat near the end of the highway along Molokai's eastern shore. This historic Hawaiian ranch sits on 14,000 acres of pastureland near the lush Halawa Valley. The working ranch was started in the 1930s by Paul Fagan, who also founded Maui's famous Hana Ranch. Not that Pu'u O Hoku hasn't also seen its share of celebrities, from Hollywood movie stars to JFK. Today a tranquil two-bedroom country cottage is available for vacation rentals. A favorite with couples looking for a private retreat, the rustic home has hardwood floors, tropical wicker furniture, and distant sea views. There's a full kitchen, dining room and covered porch. A TV, VCR, and telephone are available upon request. Usually guests can use the swimming pool at the main lodge, popular for retreats, workshops, and seminars. During winter, there's whale watching along the shoreline, while snorkeling, horseback riding, and hiking are year-round activities. The only drawback is no dining options nearby. |
