Brown's Hotel Review: An ideal base for anyone seeking English panache, Brown's now belongs to the Rocco Forte Hotel group. This collection of eleven Georgian townhouses, having undergone a sleek, £24 million refurbishment, remains a delightful, old-fashioned hotel with stained-glass windows and oak paneling. It was opened in 1837 by a retired gentleman's valet, and Queen Victoria was a frequent visitor here, as was Rudyard Kipling, who wrote "The Jungle Book" while staying in the hotel. The 117 bedrooms, including 29 luxurious suites, have been decorated individually by Olga Polizzi, Forte's sister, in inviting hues of sage and chocolate, making the rooms feel cozy rather than too grand. Some have four-poster beds, and all contain antiques and excellent bath facilities. On the dining scene, HIX Mayfair, fronted by executive chef Lee Streeton and director of food Mark Hix, offers an outstanding menu featuring British classics and light fish dishes, created from carefully sourced, local, seasonal ingredients. The English Tea Room serves traditional afternoon tea, and Donovan Bar specializes in Champagnes by the glass. For guests looking to unwind, an on-site fitness center has three spa treatment rooms.
