Probably the most quintessentially English of London’s top hotels, The Connaught has always attracted guests for the sort of understatement the nation is famed for; a rarefied hushed elegance and feeling of absolute top comfort and quality British service. From the outside it doesn’t even look very much like a London hotel, with its red brick façade fitting perfectly with its Mayfair neighbors. The ratio of staff to guests is very high and it shows. It has never sought to be fashionable; instead it has the feel of a grand country-house transplanted to London. Marble fireplaces, oak panelling and wonderfully ornate ceilings in the public areas, which are furnished with antiques and paintings, add to the atmosphere. A recently completed renovation completely updated the entire property from the infrastucture to the smallest details. Bedrooms are luxurious and decorated in appropriate English chintzes; bathrooms are Grecian Thassos marble and now feature flat screen TVs. While tradition is very much to the fore, the needs of the twenty-first century are not forgotten with the upgrade to WiFi access, a Fitness Studio (personal training is available) and massage treatments from Thailand and Japan. |
